Mountain-loving heart of mine

Ah, life and its turns. Not a lot of what I’ve been through has turned out quite the way I’d pictured it. That’s what makes it interesting, I suppose.

Like now, for instance. Snowed in at a mountain lodge. I won’t be working here this winter, because I need to be elsewhere for medical reasons. My plan was just to go here over the weekend and grab my stuff, but apparently the Powers That Be had other plans. The snow storm of the century blew in, and the trains stopped running for days.

It’s pretty spectacular. Winds of 20 m/s and snow piled so high we can’t see out anymore. Staaaayyy, winter seems to say. This is where you’re meant to be. Not to mention the fact that my former coworkers are practically bombarding me with love and kindness. There is no room for doubting that I’m going to be missed.

It’s enough to break my heart, to think how much I am going to miss this place. To trade snow and skiing and tranquility and simple living for mud and rain and noise and the endless demands of city life. But then again, there is love and community and all sorts of wonderful things to live for in the South. I can make it work.

So break, then, winter-loving, mountain-loving heart of mine. Break, and then heal. Say goodbye, have a cry, then move on. Patch yourself together with the conviction that nothing is permanent and that there is joy to be found in the strangest of circumstances.

Goodbye, beloved place. Thank you for showing me what life can be like, and who I can grow into. You will remain (mountains have a tendency to do that), and I will likely return some time in the future. Until then, I will practice the most profound piece of wisdom you have taught me:

Be where you are.

This was before the storm blew in. To picture the current state
of things, just look at something white.

Love and goodbye,
